TAMPA, Fla.—Marion “Hack” Mixson, Beta (Presbyterian), known for his kind heart and passion for helping others, passed to the Chapter Eternal on May 19, 2010. Born March 20, 1918 in Charleston, S.C., he was the son of Elizabeth McCarthy and Pi Kappa Phi Founder Lawrence Harry Mixson.
READ FULL ARTICLE »Jerry T. Brewer, Sigma (South Carolina), has been selected as Mr. Pi Kappa Phi 2010. For more than 30 years, Jerry has faithfully served the fraternity in a number of different roles, most impressively, serving on three of Pi Kappa Phi’s four national boards including terms as National President and Chairman of the Foundation Board of Trustees. He is the first recipient of the Mr. Pi Kappa Phi award from Sigma chapter.
Established in 1965, the Mr. Pi Kappa Phi award is the highest honor to be bestowed upon a member. Jerry is the 44th recipient of the award. Click here to view a complete list of Mr. Pi Kappa Phi recipients over the years.
The National Council has named Frank M. Ryll Jr., Beta Eta (Florida State), as the fraternity’s Hall of Fame inductee for 2010. Frank served as the president of the Florida Chamber of Commerce from 1982 to 2008, holding a distinguished record of service in what is one of the nation’s largest state chambers. Frank will receive this award at Supreme Chapter in Orlando, Fla., on August 5-9.
Today, the Florida Chamber is a federation of organizations that has more than 139,000 grassroots members and more than 3 million employers. Frank’s leadership across three separate decades helped to shape the Florida Chamber in to the organization it is today. Through Frank’s tremendous success in his professional endeavors he has brought credit to Pi Kappa Phi, and he has also served the fraternity as a volunteer. He has previously served on the Housing Corporation for Beta Eta as well as the Pi Kappa Phi Properties Board of Directors.
On April 18, 2010, Pi Kappa Phi was honored as a leader in the fraternity movement by its interfraternal peers. T.J. Sullivan, Alpha Psi (Indiana), and Push America’s Build America program were recognized at the North-American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) Annual Meeting for their contribution to the Greek community.
Sullivan was recognized with the NIC’s Alumni Award of Distinction as a fraternity man who “has given specifically of his time, talents and service to the betterment of the fraternity—at the local, regional or national level.” T.J. is a re-founding father of his chapter, former national staff member and long-serving volunteer of Pi Kappa Phi. He was recognized by the NIC for his work with more than 2 million college students across the country as the CEO and co-founder of CAMPUSPEAK, an organization that provides educational speakers and interactive workshops to college students and Greek communities.
One of the newest initiatives within the Foundation, the International Scholars Program seeks to help tomorrow’s leaders develop the necessary skills to think and work globally.
The program provides a grant to talented student leaders who have been accepted into an accredited study abroad program, but who might not otherwise have the resources to participate.
Through a rigorous application process, students are evaluated on their academic efforts, leadership and community service experience and financial need. Five students were selected this year.
