Pi Kappa Phi is privileged to have over 1,300 volunteers nationwide, who give their time, talent and treasures to ensure the men of Pi Kappa Phi are afforded an outstanding fraternity experience.
My name is Lane Luckie, I have been volunteering with Pi Kappa Phi since 2008. I volunteer in a number of capacities including Chapter Advisor, University of Texas at Tyler; President, Beta Omicron Alumni Chapter; Faculty, Pi Kapp College for Emerging Leaders; Faculty, Pi Kapp College for Chapter Officers; Facilitator, Ladder of Risk and ASTP.
I believe one person can truly make a difference in the life of another and I hope to never ignore that calling. It’s quite humbling to think of the many Pi Kappa Phi alumni and friends who have spent countless hours mentoring me and continue to do so. I’ve now been in the “real world” for a decade and am constantly reminded of the people who have helped me find success and fulfillment pursuing my dream career as a journalist.
Pi Kappa Phi has supported many of the values of my upbringing, like service before self and the golden rule. I’ve forged lifelong friendships and had a more memorable collegiate experience because of the fraternity. In a professional sense, Pi Kappa Phi taught me to how to work within a group of diverse individuals and to realize the value in being a self-starter. I feel like I’ve become an expert in the art of leadership, consensus building, compromise, motivating a team and running a business. I’ve also learned why respect and personal integrity are among the most valuable qualities one can possess.
Along this journey, I’ve had groups of generous individuals supporting my personal growth. Each of them share a desire to help our Pi Kappa Phi members share in experiential learning opportunities that lead to a more fulfilling future. I suspect their motivation comes from a self-realized need to pay it forward. Of the Pi Kappa Phi volunteers I admire most, they all credit “standing on the shoulders of giants” to reach their dreams. So, there’s no question about remaining involved. As Durward Owen has said, “It’s about repaying your debt.” It’s quite fulfilling to watch our students grow and achieve, knowing you were in their shoes not so long ago.
Pi Kappa Phi is molding the citizens and family members our world so desperately needs and it’s a great privilege to support that in any way. Our students, alumni and volunteers continue to teach me so much about brotherhood!
