The tournament is an expansion of an annual memorial golf classic for a brother and alumni of both the Theta Sigma (Cal State-Long Beach) and Zeta Rho (Cal State-Fullerton) Chapters. Matthew Rzyski passed away in June of 2011 from an acute onset case of Bacterial Meningitis. He was an active brother of the fraternity and a highly involved leader within both of his chapters. Upon his transfer from Cal State-Fullerton to Cal State-Long Beach, he was instrumental in starting the Theta Sigma Chapter which chartered in 2008. After his passing, the chapter decided to start an annual scholarship and memorial golf classic in his honor, which has been held each spring semester since 2012. Proceeds from this tournament fund the annual scholarship.
