20 paddlers and one drummer practiced in the week leading up the race, learning how to maneuver the long boat painted in creative designs. The event, which is a fundraiser for the NSU Foundation, brought together other student organizations and other Natchitoches businesses and community groups.
Teamwork and endurance were put to the test on Saturday as the Pi Kapps and Tri Sigmas took to Chaplin’s Lake on the NSU campus. The rowers competed under the name ‘Morgan Militia’ in honor of David and Sherry Morgan, who sponsored the Pi Kappa Phi and Tri Sigma boat. The couple are alumni of the two organizations.
Their first heat ended with a victory over the Natchitoches Parish Teachers, with a 58 second time in 200 meter sprint. Later in the afternoon, the Pi Kapps and Tri Sigmas went head-to-head with Greek rivals Kappa Sigma & Phi Mu, finishing ahead by an entire boat length. The final race ended with the so-called ‘Morgan Militia’ finishing 2nd in their heat and 5th overall.
A large crowd of students, faculty, community members, and prospective NSU students on campus for a preview day lined the banks of Chaplin’s Lake to cheer on the teams and take in the exciting atmosphere.
