Doug Garner is a long time sponsor of The Ability Experience and the Journey of Hope South route. Doug has been coordinating a wheelchair basketball game and clinic with the UTA (University of Texas Ð Arlington) Movin’ Mav’s and the south route in Arlington for many years. He serves as the head coach of the Movin’ Mav’s and is also a big advocate in Texas for people with disabilities.
Doug Garner is being honored by the White House in conjunction with celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). Over the past seven years, he has worked to increase the number of students with disabilities attending UTA and has increase programs and participation of students with physical disabilities from a wheelchair tennis team, to an adapted track and field team and has introduced a Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team, the Lady Movin’ Mavs to the campus.
Under his leadership, participation of students on campus in adapted programs has risen to almost three dozen UTA Students in 2015, over 1,700 community participants in a variety of adapted special events, and over 500 annual participation opportunities for this population.
