Dr. Phillip M. Summers

Dr. Phillip “Phil” Summers was initiated into Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity on November 15, 1958. As an undergraduate member, he represented the Alpha Psi Chapter at the first Pi Kapp College in Sumter, South Carolina, in 1959. After earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Indiana University, he received his PhD from Indiana State University.
With his PhD in hand, Summers returned to Vincennes University, where he had completed his associate degree before attending Indiana University. He served in various roles at Vincennes before being appointed the University’s 18th president in 1980. In this role, he guided Vincennes, creating a desirable environment and learning experience at Indiana’s only comprehensive two-year University. Summers was pivotal in developing the Aviation Technology Center at the Indianapolis International Airport and the University’s Military Education Program. He believed everyone should be able to access higher education, working to provide college courses for high school students, distance education and online courses. Summers served in this role for 21 years before transitioning to an adjunct professor of psychology, teaching at both Vincennes and Indiana University.
Throughout his long career, Summers contributed in countless ways to the universities he worked for, was affiliated with and was an active contributor to numerous organizations and philanthropic causes in his community. He was a dedicated education and administrator who impacted generations of college students, and his advocacy for vocational education was impactful at the state and national levels.
In Pi Kappa Phi, Summers utilized his leadership and expertise in higher education to move the Fraternity forward through his roles as National Council Secretary, Vice President and ultimately President. He presided over the search for a new executive director, facilitated a smooth transition and gave his utmost attention, dedication and effort to the Fraternity throughout his life.
Summers entered the Chapter Eternal on September 29, 2013.
