Adrian Cronauer

Armed Forces Radio, Inspiration for “Good Morning Vietnam”

Member-at-large

Adrian Cronauer, member-at-large, was initiated into Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity on August 3, 2002. Born in 1938, Cronauer was a U.S. Air Force sergeant, radio broadcaster and the inspiration behind the 1987 film Good Morning, Vietnam. In his role, he was more than just a radio DJ. In times of fear and anything but normalcy, his high energy and humor helped troops stationed overseas feel at home, if only for a little while. His booming, iconic greeting – “Good morning, Vietnam!” – became a constant for many in a world of unknowns. After his military service ended, he transitioned to work in broadcasting, law and Veterans Affairs, advocating for prisoners of war and missing in action issues as a Pentagon official. Long after his final broadcast, he ensured that his listeners, those who had served their country, were never forgotten. Today, he is perhaps best known as the inspiration for “Good Morning Vietnam,” the 1987 film starring Robin Williams.
