Baylor Pi Kapp, Baylor Special Olympics and Best Buddies were chosen to sponsor the event because of their long tradition and tremendous support for people with disabilities. Theta Kappa alumni and current Alumni Advisor Eddie Labid facilitated the event. Labid, who works as the Education & Advocacy Program Specialist at Baylor University, coordinated the event with the help of the Baylor Pi Kappa Phi Chapter. “I chose this topic for the community chat because of my undergraduate experience in Pi Kappa Phi working with The Ability Experience”.
The chat featured a student leader panel including current Theta Kappa philanthropy chairman Austin Brakebill. Brakebill shared some of the triumphs and challenges of volunteering and why The Ability Experience means so much to him. An Etiquette Guide presentation followed the student panel. The guide gave specific tips on how to interact with people with disabilities courtesy of The Ability Experience. “I’m glad that the chapter was able to help raise awareness and advocate on behalf of people we care so much about,” Labid said.
Over 75 students attended the event and left with knowledge on how the Baylor community is supporting those with disabilities.
