2020 Thirty Under 30: Zack VanHoesen

Zack shows that he has a passion for caring for humans and animals alike through his mentorship roles and dedication to his chosen career path. He graduated from Oregon State University and played an active role in the Alpha Zeta chapter during his time as a collegiate member where he served on the Executive Council. He also participated in Build America, which he recalls as being an event that contributed to his successes today. After graduating with a degree in Animal Science and Leadership, he immediately started veterinary school at Oregon State University. After his first year of veterinary school, he was awarded the John W. Demuth Jr. Veterinary Medicine Scholarship Award for his academic success and leadership presence. He excels in research and was awarded a grant to do zoonotic research in France. During his second year of schooling, he was awarded Dean’s list Honors for the entire year as well as the Zoetis Veterinary Excellence Scholarship Award. He served as the president of the Student American Veterinary Medical Association and a Royal Canine Nutrition Ambassador. Outside of classes he volunteers veterinary services such as facilitating veterinary leadership conferences, volunteering with the Red Cross Army Base, and assisting with pro bono surgeries at Humane Societies. After he graduates from veterinary school, he will commission into the Army Veterinary Corps where he will work with service dogs, conduct research, and support animals on Army bases across the world. He believes that all his accomplishments involving the benefit of others have truly been the most meaningful. Outside of his school and volunteering, he spent two years as the chapter advisor and the last year as “House Dad” for the Alpha Zeta chapter and says, “I have found fulfillment in the opportunity to guide and assist my undergraduate brothers by assuming a mentor role.” To him, being a Pi Kappa Phi means holding yourself to a higher standard, providing a moral example for those around you, and giving everything you can to make those around you stronger, healthier, and happier.
